Applications

  • Universal fitment on left or right cylinder head on all Chevrolet Gen III and IV LS family engine blocks (including Vortec iron blocks) with the following properties:
    • Must use accessory drive systems with alternator on left cylinder head.
      • Some GM truck platform accessory drives block access to the cylinder head mounting location used with the kit.
      • Catch can may be mounted on the left cylinder head if the alternator is located on the right cylinder head, but longer lines will be needed. Contact us for assistance.
    • Must not have a factory airbox on the right side of the vehicle.
      • Some factory air filter boxes (mostly trucks) will interfere with the catch can. May clear some aftermarket cold air intakes.
    • Application Note: Engines with PCV line connection from the valve cover to the intake manifold (most 1997-2002 engines) will require splicing into the factory PCV line, longer lines, or upgrading to the newer style valley cover. Please contact us for assistance.
    • Application Note: Engines with an external PCV valve (most 1997-2004 engines) will require splicing the PCV valve into the new line or adding a restrictor in place of the PCV valve.

Direct Fit for Gen III & IV LS Engines

This universal kit works with virtually all Gen III & IV LS-family engines. This single kit includes everything needed to accommodate the both the OEM quick-connect fittings found on later Gen IV engines as well as push-on barb connections found on earlier Gen III engines. See the Applications section at the bottom of this page for more details.

The kit includes custom lines and a billet aluminum bracket that bolts directly to the left or right cylinder head, plus an optional spacer to clear engine covers and evap lines in some applications. The multiple mounting options makes this a great kit for engine swaps! Please note that if mounting to the left side cylinder head, you will need longer lines, so contact us for assistance.

Why Install a Catch Can?

GM's LS family small block engines often expel large amounts of oil and oil mist into the intake manifold. Most intake manifolds we have dismantled are coated in excess engine oil. This results in excessive carbon build-up on the intake valves and reduces the octane of the air/fuel mixture, affecting horsepower.

While carbon build up will not ruin your engine, it will result in reduced performance in the long run, so it's important to keep the air as clean as possible. Adding a good catch can to the crankcase ventilation system will help reduce this carbon build up and keep your engine cleaner and running smoothly.

An Improved Oil Catch Can

Improved Racing set out to design the best air-oil separating catch can we possibly could. We focused on a three simple design goals:

  1. Maximize efficiency: Separate as much vapor from crankcase blow-by fumes as possible with minimal restriction.
  2. Easy to use: The catch can should be simple and enjoyable to use in every aspect including mounting, draining, and cleaning.
  3. Durable: Virtually indestructible. Made from high-quality, reliable components. As with any Improved Racing product, nothing will vibrate loose or come apart under racing conditions.

The CCS's design maximizes air-oil separation efficiency, resulting in a peak separation efficiency of 85-90%. For comparison, none of the competitor's catch cans we tested showed a peak efficiency of more than 60%. These results were achieved on our bench testing system at air flow rates of 0-4.0 CFM and vaporized oil injection rates of 0.20-0.30 grams of oil per minute.

Tangential Entry Port
  • Air enters the catch can manifold tangentially, causing it to spin.
  • The centrifugal force of the spinning air forces heavier particles to the outside of the manifold, where they combine into larger droplets.
Stainless Steel Filter
  • Multiple layers of stainless steel mesh of varying porosities are sintered together to comprise a single filter.
  • Effective filter rating is 100 microns. 
  • Filter is made from 316 stainless steel and is washable.
Multiple O-Ring Seals
  • Three internal seals (shown in green) were used to ensure that no dirty air bypasses the filter. This is a major contributor to poor filtering efficiency and a very common problem we found in other catch cans.
  • One primary O-ring seals the top and bottom half of the catch can (shown in red).
Anti-Splash-Back Funnel
  • The stamped aluminum funnel prevents fluid in the reservoir from splashing back onto the exit port (another common problem found in some catch cans).
  • The funnel features spiral grooves which serve two purposes:
    1. They help combine oil droplets so they drain quickly into the reservoir.
    2. CFD simulations have shown they help spiral the air, contributing to cyclonic separation.
Bell Mouth Plenum
  • Extensive R&D went into designing the exit port plenum.
  • The bell mouth shaped sheds oil droplets collected on its outer perimeter, preventing fluid from exiting the catch can.
  • The large bell mouth opening slows air velocity before exiting the catch can and reduce the probability of any fluid becoming entrained and exiting the can.
7.0 fl oz (207 ml) Reservoir
  • The 7.0 fl oz (207 ml) reservoir is more than sufficient for most engines.

Improved Racing's quick-release reservoir is so easy to remove that it eliminates the need for a sight glass. Just push up and twist an 1/8th turn to remove the reservoir and look inside. No more fumbling or endless unscrewing to remove the reservoir.

No sight glass also means improved durability at higher operating temps. And no more trying to interpret a difficult-to-read sight glass to check your fluid level. Just look inside!

Improved Racing's CNC-machined LS specific mounting bracket can be mounted to either the right or left cylinder head, with or without an optional spacer. The optional spacer, shown in the photo below, offsets the can from the engine to clear larger engine covers, evap lines, etc.

All Radium Engineering brand products are subject to a 1 Year Limited Warranty from the date of original purchase. If a product fails, it will be repaired or replaced at Radium Engineering’s option when it has been determined by Radium Engineering to have failed due to defects in materials or workmanship. Warranty claims must be made by the original purchaser. If the purchase was made from a retailer other than radiumauto.com, please contact the place of purchase for further assistance. This warranty is limited to repair or replacement of the merchandise only and shall not, in no event, exceed the original purchase price. Radium Engineering will not be held responsible for secondary or consequential damages or costs (including labor time, towing, etc.) incurred due to failure of the product. Standard ground shipping is used for all warranty transactions. Expedited shipping is available, but the cost difference must be paid by the end user in advance of the shipment. Warranty claims must ship pre-paid to Radium Engineering for review. Claims must include the failed part(s), RMA number, and original proof of purchase. If the claim is missing any of these items, it may be rejected and returned to sender. Product must be received by Radium Engineering within 14 days of RMA’s issue date. Please note that before Radium Engineering can issue an RMA for any product, it is first necessary for the installer or end user to contact info@radiumauto.com to discuss the problem. Most issues can be resolved via email. Under no circumstances should a product be returned or a RMA requested before the above process transpires. This warranty applies to the original purchaser only and is non-transferrable. Improper use, installation, modification, abuse, or unauthorized repairs or alterations voids this warranty. Credit for defective products will be issued pending inspection by Radium Engineering. This warranty does not extend to third party products often used in Radium Engineering products, such as fuel pumps, turbochargers, or any other non-Radium Engineering brand products.
